ΤΟGETHER IN EUROPE AGAINST FASCISM AND RACISM.... ANTIΡΑΤΣΙΣΤΙΚΗ ΣΥΓΚΕΝΤΡΩΣΗ ΣΤΙΣ 15 ΔΕΚΕΜΒΡΙΟΥ

Together in Europe for democracy,

against rascism, antisemitism and neo-Nazism !

In Greece like elsewhere in Europe, racism, antisemitism and neo-Nazism are expanding, without any strong and determined mobilization from the democrats.

Racist, antisemitic and revisionist speeches as well as the increasing number of violent behaviours in Greece jeopardize the fundamental values of democracy, in the very country where it was born.

This must not be considered as a « natural » and negligible consequence of the economic and social crisis that cripples the country, not only because it is essential for a democratic society to respect Human Rights, but also because the crisis will not end tomorrow.

Given today’s intolerable situation in Greece, we, leaders of the civil society, intellectuals, artists, citizens involved in the social and political life, say together and loud : “Enough !”

Enough with racist attacks ! Enough with collusion between the police and Golden Dawn’s neo-Nazi thugs ! Enough with racist, antisemitic and revisionist declarations ! Enough with the passivity of the legal system ! Enough with permissiveness, protection and support given de facto to the gangsters of Golden Dawn !

They only thrive on the democrats’ indifference and weaknesses.

Let us be clear : fighting racism, antisemitism and neo-Nazism in Greece does not mean fighting Greece, but fighting this ideology of hatred spreading across the whole continent.

It means being part of the great European struggle for democracy. It means supporting all of these who, elsewhere in Europe, also take part in this struggle and who need the democrats to mobilize in Greece. It means offering everyone, and especially young people, both a hope and a future, better than the unreachable horizon of debt repayment. It means keeping the European dream alive, the dream of a truly democratic continent, cleared of racism and antisemitism.

In this great and beautiful fight, Europe must commit itself, since the European policies imposed on Greece, particularly in terms of immigration and austerity, create the conditions for neo-Nazism to spread.

Greek political leaders must also commit themselves : the malfunctioning of some state institutions, the indifference and the support brought de facto to Golden Dawn feed the permissiveness that make it possible for racist acts and speeches to multiply.

The whole society must get involved. All individuals have the responsibility to say “Enough !”, to make neo-Nazis understand that democracy imposes boundaries and that the democrats are determined to have those boundaries respected.

This is why we call on all the individuals fond of justice, freedom and equality to join us in order to express their commitment to democracy and their reject of racism, antisemitism and neo-Nazism, by walking together, on Saturday, December 15^th, at 3pm, from the Parliament to the Acropolis.

Μαζί στην Ευρώπη για την δημοκρατία

Ενάντια στην ρατσισμό, τον αντισημιτισμό και τον νεοναζισμό!

Ο ρατσισμός, ο αντισημιτισμός και ο νεοναζισμός αναπτύσσονται, στην Ελλάδα αλλά και αλλού στην Ευρώπη, χωρίς ωστόσο οι δημοκρατικές δυνάμεις να κινητοποιούνται δυναμικά και αποφασιστικά

Η ρατσιστική και αντισημιτική ρητορική καθώς και οι πράξεις βίας που πολλαπλασιάζονται στην Ελλάδα απειλούν τις θεμελιώδεις αξίες της δημοκρατίας στην ίδια τη χώρα που την γέννησε.

Αυτή η εξέλιξη δεν μπορεί να αντιμετωπίζεται ως μια «φυσική» και αμελητέα συνέπεια της οικονομικής και κοινωνικής κρίσης που μαστίζει τη χώρα, όχι μόνο επειδή τα Ανθρώπινα Δικαιώματα αποτελούν θεμέλιο για κάθε δημοκρατική κοινωνία αλλά και επειδή η κρίση δεν είναι κάτι που θα ξεπεραστεί αύριο.

Απέναντι στην ανεπίτρεπτη κατάσταση που βιώνει σήμερα η Ελλάδα, εμείς, διανοούμενοι, καλλιτέχνες, ενεργοί πολίτες της κοινωνικής και πολιτικής ζωής, λέμε όλοι μαζί με μια φωνή «Φτάνει!»

Φτάνει με τις ρατσιστικές επιθέσεις! Φτάνει με τη συμπαιγνία ανάμεσα στην αστυνομία και τους κακοποιούς νεοναζί της Χρυσής Αυγής! Φτάνει με την ρατσιστική και αντισημιτική ρητορική! Φτάνει με τη παθητική στάση της Δικαιοσύνης! Φτάνει με την ανεκτικότητα, τη προστασία και την εκ των πραγμάτων στήριξη που απολαμβάνουν οι γανγκστερ της Χρυσής Αυγής!

Αυτοί τρέφονται από την αδιαφορία και τις αδυναμίες των δημοκρατών δυνάμεων

Ας είμαστε ξεκάθαροι: Όταν πολεμάει κανείς τον ρατσισμό, τον αντισημιτισμό και τον νεοναζισμό στην Ελλάδα, δεν σημαίνει ότι πολεμάει την Ελλάδα. Σημαίνει ότι πολεμάει την ιδεολογία του μίσους που αναπτύσσεται από άκρη σε άκρη της Ευρώπης

Σημαίνει ότι συμμετέχει στην μεγάλη ευρωπαϊκή μάχη για την δημοκρατία. Σημαίνει ότι στηρίζει αυτούς που, παντού στην Ευρώπη, συμμερίζονται αυτή τη μάχη και έχουν ανάγκη την κινητοποίηση των δημοκρατικών δυνάμεων στην Ελλάδα. Σημαίνει ότι δίνει σε όλους, και κυρίως στους νεότερους, μια ελπίδα και μια προοπτική για το μέλλον διαφορετική από αυτήν που περιορίζει τον ορίζοντα σε μια μάχη για την αποπληρωμή του χρέους. Σημαίνει ότι παλεύει για το ευρωπαϊκό όνειρο, αυτό μιας ηπείρου πραγματικά δημοκρατικής απαλλαγμένης από τον ρατσισμό και τον αντισημιτισμό

Σε αυτή την μεγάλη μάχη, η Ευρώπη πρέπει να αναλάβει τις ευθύνες της, γιατί οι ευρωπαϊκές πολιτικές που επιβάλλονται στην Ελλάδα, κυρίως σε ότι αφορά στην λιτότητα και στη μετανάστευση, δημιουργούν τις συνθήκες για την εξάπλωση του νεοναζισμού.

Οι Έλληνες πολιτικοί πρέπει να αναλάβουν τις ευθύνες τους, γιατί η δυσλειτουργία ορισμένων κρατικών θεσμών αλλά και η αδιαφορία μέχρι και η υποστήριξη που απολαμβάνει η Χρυσή Αυγή αποτελούν τη βάση για την ανεκτικότητα με την οποία αντιμετωπίζονται η ρητορική και οι πράξεις μίσους.

Ολόκληρη η κοινωνία πρέπει να αναλάβει τις ευθύνες της. Όλοι οι πολίτες έχουν προσωπικό καθήκον να πουν «Φτάνει!», να στείλουν στους νεοναζί το μήνυμα ότι υπάρχουν όρια τα οποία επιβάλει η δημοκρατία και τα οποία οι πολίτες είναι αποφασισμένοι να προασπιστούν

Γιαυτό καλούμε όλους όσους πιστεύουν στη δικαιοσύνη, την ελευθερία και την ισότητα, να ενωθούν μαζί μας για να εκφράσουμε την αφοσίωση μας στην δημοκρατία και για να απορρίψουμε το ρατσισμό, τον αντισημιτισμό και τον νεοναζισμό. Η πορεία θα πραγματοποιηθεί το Σάββατο 15 Δεκεμβρίου στις 15:00 από την Βουλή στην Ακρόπολη.

Ensemble en Europe pour la démocratie,

contre le racisme, l’antisémitisme et le néo-Nazisme !

Le racisme, l’antisémitisme et le néo-Nazisme se développent, en Grèce comme ailleurs en Europe, sans que les démocrates ne se mobilisent avec force et détermination.

Les discours racistes, antisémites et négationnistes et les passages à l’acte violents qui se multiplient en Grèce menacent les valeurs fondamentales de la démocratie, dans le pays même où elle est née.

Cela ne doit pas être considéré comme une conséquence « naturelle » et négligeable de la crise économique et sociale qui frappe le pays de plein fouet, non seulement parce que le respect des Droits de l’Homme est fondamental pour une société démocratique, mais aussi parce que la crise ne va pas s’arrêter demain.

Face à la situation intolérable que connaît la Grèce aujourd’hui, nous, dirigeants de la société civile, intellectuels, artistes, citoyens engagés dans la vie sociale et politique, disons ensemble et avec force : « Assez ! ».

Assez d’agressions racistes ! Assez de collusion entre la police et les nervis néo-Nazis d’Aube Dorée ! Assez de déclarations racistes, antisémites et négationnistes ! Assez de la passivité de la Justice ! Assez de la permissivité, de la protection et du soutien de fait apportés aux gangsters d’Aube Dorée !

Ils ne se nourrissent que de l’indifférence et des faiblesses des démocrates.

Soyons clairs : combattre le racisme, l’antisémitisme et le néo-Nazisme en Grèce, ce n’est pas combattre la Grèce, c’est combattre cette idéologie de la haine qui se déploie sur tout le continent.

C’est faire partie du grand combat européen pour la démocratie. C’est apporter un soutien à tous ceux qui, ailleurs en Europe, partagent ce combat et qui ont besoin que les démocrates se mobilisent en Grèce. C’est offrir à tous, et en particulier aux plus jeunes, un espoir et une perspective d’avenir autre que l’horizon indépassable du remboursement de la dette. C’est faire vivre le rêve européen, celui d’un continent véritablement démocratique car débarrassé du racisme et de l’antisémitisme.

Dans ce grand et beau combat, l’Europe doit s’engager, car les politiques européennes imposées à la Grèce, notamment en matière d’immigration et d’austérité, créent les conditions de déploiement du néo-Nazisme.

Les dirigeants politiques grecs doivent s’engager, car le dysfonctionnement de certaines institutions étatiques comme l’indifférence voire le soutien de fait apportés à Aube Dorée contribuent à la permissivité avec laquelle les actes et discours racistes se multiplient.

Toute la société doit s’engager. Tous les individus ont la responsabilité de dire « Assez ! », de faire comprendre aux néo-Nazis qu’il y a des limites que la démocratie impose et que les démocrates sont déterminés à les faire respecter.

C’est pourquoi nous appelons tous ceux qui sont épris de justice, de liberté et d’égalité à nous rejoindre pour exprimer leur attachement à la démocratie et leur rejet du racisme, de l’antisémitisme et du néo-Nazisme en marchant ensemble, le samedi 15 décembre, à partir de 15h, du Parlement à l’Acropole.

THE TRUE MEANING OF AMERICA'S JEWISH VOTE FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA AND THE ISRAEL-PALESTINE ESCALATING CONFLICT...

It’s oe of the oldest canards in American politics — the claim that Jewish Americans are single-issue voters whose support goes to those candidates with the most hawkish views on Israel.

This myth has had a hold on American politics for decades, and it’s taken a serious toll on American foreign policy in the Middle East.

In particular, fear of political consequences has led U.S. politicians and policy makers to back away from asserting the active leadership needed to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

On Tuesday night, Jewish Americans once again debunked that myth.

Political donors like Sheldon Adelson and groups like the Republican Jewish Coalition and the Emergency Committee for Israel spent tens of millions of dollars in 2012 and before to sow fear and doubt over Israel and to move Jewish votes away from President Obama and the Democratic Party.

Yet the scare tactics didn’t work, and the millions spent were for naught. Seventy percent of American Jews voted for Barack Obama. The result is in line with the 74 percent support he received in 2008, and the 70 percent average support Democratic presidential candidates have received since exit polling began in 1972.

In the swing states of Ohio and Florida, Jewish voters backed the president by 69 and 68 percent, respectively. They supported Democrats for Congress nationally by 69 to 30 percent. As they always have.

The 4 percent decline in support for the president since 2008 simply tracks the similar small decline among the broader population and among white, Catholic and Protestant voters.

Campaigns to shift Jewish votes over Israel don’t work because the overwhelming majority of Jewish voters say the economy, not Israel, is their top electoral concern, followed by health care, Social Security and Medicare. Turns out that Jewish Americans have the same voting concerns as all other Americans.

When it comes to Israel, Jewish Americans are notably moderate in their views.

Eighty-two percent of American Jews support a two-state solution; 76 percent want the president to put forward a peace plan, and 84 percent support the appointment of former president Bill Clinton as a special envoy.

For some, this may read like breaking news because the prevailing narrative around the Jewish vote is so deeply ingrained in our politics.

For decades a loud minority of Jewish Americans has made the case that their hawkish views represent the entirety of the Jewish community. Their well-funded campaigns and lobbying between elections reinforce the appearance of broad-based support for their conservative views.

They haven’t succeeded in moving actual votes, however, because the fundamental premise is simply not true. Of course, the vast majority of Jewish Americans care deeply about Israel and want their politicians to be pro-Israel. But they aren’t single-issue voters and they’re not uniformly hawkish when it comes to Israel.

Understanding the politics of the Jewish community is vital, because Israel desperately needs a two-state solution if it is to remain both Jewish and democratic — before the chance slips away.

Israeli leaders from the current president, Shimon Peres, to senior political figures like Ehud Olmert, Ehud Barak and Tzipi Livni are passionate on this point. And 81 percent of Jewish Americans agree.

Resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is also a vital American national interest, a fact articulated consistently by American statesmen from both parties as well as by many current American military, intelligence and diplomatic officials.

Opponents of the two-state solution understand it won’t happen without strong American leadership and engagement. That’s why settlers on the West Bank and their political allies in Israel and the United States use political fear to scare American policy makers out of exercising the leadership needed to help achieve it.

The Middle East cannot afford four more years of diplomatic inaction because American politicians live in fear of an illusion.

It is time to acknowledge that a newly re-elected President Obama not only has the political space to pursue a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in his second term; he has a mandate to do so from a significant majority of American Jews.

It is time to bury long-held myths around the Jewish vote and for the media and political pundits to stop hyperventilating over the tiniest movement within this 2 percent of the electorate.

Most important, it is time — for the sake of the United States, Israel and the Middle East as a whole — for the president to lead the way toward a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
