DECEMBER RIOTS: Film Stills.

TIME magazine readers voted protesters—from Occupy Wall Street to the violent streets of Athens—as Person Of The Year and “DECEMBER RIOTS,” written, produced and directed by Dimitri Vorris, depicts exactly that.

The film's epicenter is the cold-blooded execution of 15 year-old student Alexander Gregoropoulos by two policemen in a downtown Athens café on December 6, 2008. "December Riots," is a film about the Gregoropoulos killing, an incident that sparked riots in over seventy cities and twenty-two countries worldwide including the US. The filmmaker acquired exclusive access to never-before-seen court documents and evidence from the trial that followed Gregoropoulos’s killing. The independently financed, claustrophobic thriller, focuses on a group of Europeans and Americans trapped in an art-house movie theater in downtown Athens during the 2008 riots.

DECEMBER RIOTS: The cycle of violence never ends...

"December Riots is important, timely, and hits it's mark. Acclaimed Greek-born filmmaker Dimitri Vorris has beautifully interwoven fact and fiction, to create a dramatic tale, that is both horrifying and thought-provoking".
Christopher Martini, Director-Producer "The Stone Child", "Trooper"

Dimitri Vorris's DECEMBER RIOTS arrives like a storm that signals the times are a-changing again and that as a world we're on the cusp between despair and hope."
Amos Poe, Filmmaker, Leading figure of the No Wave Cinema Movement, "UNMADE BEDS", "THE FOREIGNER", "SUBWAY RIDERS", "EMPIRE II", "THE GUITARS", "ROCKET GIBRALTAR"

... Independent, handmade, and made possible with countless fights on the side of its creator, December Riots,
comes to remind us the life we
never lived, the fight we never fought and the reasons we got here, with bowed heads and humiliated lives ... "Chrisostomakis Laktaridis, DOCTV.GR

APRIL 15 IS INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY. REMEMBERING THE MARTYRS AND THE HEROES OF THE HOLOCAUST.

Part 1: The Sonderkommando revolt

By Dimitri Vorris

...One action will stand out alongside the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and that is the Revolt of the Sonderkommando in Auschwitz-Birkenau on October 7, 1944. This was an uprising in which Sephardi and Greeks Jews both helped plan and execute and left a memorable list of heroes and martyrs to posterity. Their victory was dual: it was a psychological victory over the Nazis who now feared the Jews in the camps and hastened their declining confidence in winning or even surviving the war and secondly, they died as free men in the tradition of Greek noble death, an outcome that has become part of western tradition, namely to fight against all odds until the very end and deny the enemy the opportunity to loot and gloat.
Feature film project "Sonderkommando", depicts one of the most heroic pages of humankind history.  The world forgets not only that Sephardic Jewry suffered during the Holocaust too, but that Jews were brave enough to revolt and fight under the most hopeless circumstances. These historical events have striking similarities with Leonidas and the 300 Spartans fighting the Battle at Thermopylae. The major difference is that, in this film, you don’t have an elite army fighting an Empire, but imprisoned, entrapped, everyday people in a death camp. They are hungry, tortured, abused, sick, ailing, armed only with an ingenious plot and self-made guns and explosives. Against the Empire of the Third Reich. They are performing the ultimate sacrifice for their fellow man and woman.

"Sonderkommando" is a film about the riots at the death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau. It is based on real historical  events.  “Sonderkommando” depicts a story that has never before been told cinematically—that of the Sonderkommando uprising at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, in which 300 Jewish prisoners (men and women) plotted to overthrow the SS and blow up the camp’s crematoria.  The Sonderkommando were camp prisoners who were forced to aid their Nazi tormentors in the process of killing fellow prisoners (cremating the bodies etc.) Every four months most of them were gassed down by the Nazis in order to eliminate eyewitness testimonies later.

I feel very strongly that this film needs to be made and the story of the Sephardic Jewish plight needs to be told.  The Sonderkommando revolt was a shining moment in WWII and Jewish history and the time is ripe to alert the world as to who these people are, why their history is so unique and important and why their dead must be remembered and their living must thrive. Anti-semitism is on the rise. The world remains unaware.

LEGENDARY EDITOR JERRY GREENBERG HONORED WITH LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AT EDDIE AWARDS

Jerry Greenberg was honored last night with a Lifetime Career Achievement Award at the 65th annual American Cinema Editors (ACE) Eddie Awards. Deadline's Ross A. Lincoln and Erik Pedersen report that "Carol Littleton presented Greenberg with his career nod. The Oscar-winning editor of The French Connection has a résumé of required viewing spanning decades, but watching his tribute reel tonight, it stuck out that, if editing is the most important part of completing a film, he is one of the most quantifiably influential people in the past 40 years. Not only on film, but given his work on Scarface, the man is partly responsible for an enormous amount of hip-hop. Greenberg was double Oscar nominee in 1980 for Apocalypse Now and Kramer Vs. Kramer, and his dozens of editing credits also include The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three, The Untouchables, Christmas Vacation, American History X and Get Carter."

Aside from Scarface and The Untouchables, Greenberg worked with De Palma on Dressed To Kill, Body Double, Wise Guys, and the music video for Bruce Springsteen's Dancing In The Dark. In Susan Dworkin's 1984 book Double De Palma, De Palma said of Greenberg, "I can just talk to him on the phone, and he'll know exactly what I want. And can even do it better."
According to the bio on the ACE press release, Greenberg "began his career in his native New York in 1960 where he learned how to edit music and began familiarizing himself with the Moviola, splicers, synchronizers and recorders. He was ready for his big break and he got it when he was offered an apprenticing job for the legendary Dede Allen on Elia Kazan’s America America. By 1967, Greenberg and Allen were working closely together and on Bonnie and Clyde, Greenberg was given the task of editing a couple of the shootout scenes and worked closely with Allen and director Arthur Penn on them. Not soon after, his career was off and running. He cut his first solo feature Bye Bye Braverman for director Sidney Lumet in 1971 and won the Oscar® and BAFTA for editing William Friedkin’s The French Connection a year later. The infamous car chase from that film has been dissected and taught at film schools ever since."

Media Misinformation On Greece Misleads the World

FORBES/By Frances Coppola

The amount of misinformation about the new Greek government being spread by the world’s media beggars belief.
On Friday, Greek financial minister Yanis Varoufakis supposedly refused to cooperate with the “Troika” of IMF , ECB and European Commission. What he actually did was refuse to cooperate with the overseers put in place by those three institutions to enforce their austerity program, which is progressively destroying the Greek economy.
Also on Friday, the Greek government’s refusal to accept further bailout loans was widely interpreted as an intention to default on its debts. This is an unwarranted assumption. Greece does not want to accept more bailout loans, because they are counterproductive for an insolvent country. But it wants to renegotiate its debts, not default on them.
Now we are told that Syriza is backtracking on its “initial defiance”. In an exclusive, Bloomberg reported that Alexis Tsipras, the Greek Prime Minister, had sent an email in which he committed Greece to paying its debts to the IMF and ECB:
Greece will repay its debts to the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund and reach a deal “soon” with the euro-area nations that funded most of the country’s financial rescue, Tsipras said in a statement e-mailed to Bloomberg News on Saturday.
“The deliberation with our European partners has just begun,” Tsipras said. “Despite the fact that there are differences in perspective, I am absolutely confident that we will soon manage to reach a mutually beneficial agreement, both for Greece and for Europe as a whole.”
The world breathed a collective sigh of relief. Syriza had seen the error of its ways, the Troika had regained the upper hand and all was well with the world.

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE mood video

...Through the voices of these four women in the film, we begin to understand the complexity of the everyday challenges and the relationship issues they are facing (one out of eight women in USA is going to face the challenge of breast cancer). And hopefully, we can transform ourselves, alter our perspectives, and, ultimately, change our own complicated and distorted relationships and attitudes towards breast-cancer patients.

The mood, pace and overall tone of the film is unique since it is elevated far above the drama of the four leading female characters. They are searching for the light in the end of the tunnel. They remain optimistic and humorous even in the worst of circumstances and challenges they are facing. Life goes on and you have to rise above adversities and obstacles. You have to re-invent yourself.

A heartfelt screenplay about finding the courage to change and fall in love again after life (and others) had let you down...

THE GREEK SECRET VIDEO: "PHILOTIMO"

Leading Greek-Americans Explain Why Hellenic Excellence Throughout History May Result From The Uniquely Greek Word “Philotimo”

Arianna Huffington, George Stephanopoulos, Bob Costas and Greek Orthodox Archbishop of America Demetrios are among the nationally-known Greek-Americans who appear in video titled The Greek Secret produced by the Washington Oxi Day Foundation. The video suggests that the secret to extraordinary Hellenic excellence -- personally and as a people -- may spring from the uniquely Greek word philotimo

This video features interviews with 29 leading Hellenes who each share their definition of a concept that only the Greek language has one word to describe: philotimo. Those interviewed defined philotimo as not only the "love of honor" but also as finding pleasure in sacrificing for: the good of others; doing the right thing; improving themselves and their families; and seeking to achieve respect and love from others.

"While it has not been released to the public until now, we gave a small number of Foundation supporters a sneak peek at this video over the weekend. It has already received over 10,000 views. Our prediction that this video can be transformational for our community and may help the Greek brand may be coming true," said Oxi Day Foundation Founder and President, Andrew Manatos.

The Foundation and many of those interviewed believe that "philotimo" may in great part explain the Greeks' spectacular achievements throughout history, as well as their close family and community relationships. The video highlights such Hellenic achievements as: the miraculous leap forward that the ancient Greeks brought to humankind’s standard of living and freedom; Greece being identified by America, Great Britain and Russia as the only other country essential to the defeat of Hitler; the Greeks’ unsurpassed response to the Holocaust; and Hellenes alone in America's 20th century rising from universal, uneducated poverty to ranking among the top in education and income.

FORENSICS REVEAL THE TRUTH ABOUT THE MURDER IN COLD BLOOD OF STUDENT ALEXANDROS GREGOROPOULOS

DECEMBER RIOTS CLIP from DIMITRI VORRIS on Vimeo.

Footage from my feature film "DECEMBER RIOTS" about the murder of 15 year-old student Alexandros Gregoropoulos by two policemen and the riots that followed his execution on December 6, 2008 just a few blocks away from my office.. Unarmed, and not dangerous, Alexandros was murdered by two policemen while sitting at a downtown cafe. In cold blood..... Gregropoulos, the innocent victim of police brutality, became an instant martyr for his generation.
