70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEPORTATION OF SALONICA JEWS TO EXTERMINATION CAMPS

ATHENS, Greece (JTA) -- The Jewish community of Thessaloniki in northern Greece will hold a series of events commemorating the 70th anniversary of the first deportations of the city’s Jews to Auschwitz.
On March 15, 1943, the Nazis sent the first convoy of some 4,000 Jews from Thessaloniki to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. By August, 49,000 out of the city’s pre-war population of 55,000 Jews had been deported. Fewer than 2,000 survived.
The events will include a march on March 16 from the city’s Liberty Square to the Old Railway Station where a memorial ceremony will be held. That will be followed by the main commemoration ceremony on March 17 at Thessaloniki’s Monastiriotes Synagogue, where Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is expected to speak.
The Jewish community will also inaugurate a photographic exhibit about the deportations and hold a concert at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which was constructed on the site of a destroyed Jewish cemetery.
The Jewish community of Thessaloniki was one of the most important centers of Sephardic Jewry for 450 years following the expulsion from Spain. Known as the Flower of the Balkans, it was the center of Ladino culture in the region.
Following the deportations, Jewish property was looted, synagogues were destroyed, priceless Ladino libraries were shipped to Germany and Jewish cemetery headstones were used as construction materials.
Also March 17, the World Jewish Congress will hold a special meeting in Thessaloniki, headed by Ronald Lauder, as part of the commemorations. The gathering is part of the organization's efforts to support vulnerable Jewish communities, the World Jewish Congress said in a statement
Today, about 1,000 Jews live in the city and they are “adversely affected by the country’s deep economic problems and by the rise of the extremist Golden Dawn, a movement whose leaders openly deny the Holocaust,” according to the World Jewish Congress.

FOOTBALL PLAYER BANNED FOR LIFE FOR GIVING NAZI SALUTE IN SWIFT ACTION BY SOCCER FEDERATION

The very day that marked the sad 70th anniversary of the deportation of the Greek Jews to Nazi extermination camps a 20 year-old football player of soccer team AEK, Giorgos Katidis, hailed the crowd with a Nazi salute and was banned for life from Greek soccer teams.

EURO ZONE NEAR COLLAPSE AFTER EUROGROUP DECISION TO IMPOSE 10% LEVY IN DEPOSITS AND 20%-25% TO INTEREST. CYPRUS EXODUS FROM EURO IMMINENT

Consumers in Cyprus lining up to make withdrawals....
Panic, fear and shock prevails in European South

CYPRUS BANK RUN EXPECTED TUESDAY...ANGER AND PANIC ALL OVER EUROZONE AND RUSSIA....

The Cypriot government decided earlier today to impose a 6.75 percent tax on bank deposits as high as 100,000 euros ($130,580) and a 9.9 percent levy on deposits in excess of that amount in order to win a European aid package.
The measure, due to raise 5.8 billion euros, is designed to help limit the amount of outside emergency funds for Cyprus to a maximum of 10 billion euros and keep Cypriot debt sustainable. The Cypriot government had previously vowed to protect depositors.
“The exchange of this levy with shares in the banking institutions affected gives an upside potential,” Sarris told reporters in Brussels after euro-area finance chiefs reached the agreement that also includes a planned rise in the Cypriot corporate tax rate to 12.5 percent from 10 percent.
The euro area had refused to exclude the possibility of imposing losses on bank-account holders in Cyprus as a way to prevent its debt from becoming unsustainable while negotiating a rescue program that has been in the works for nine months. Such an element isn’t part of existing aid packages for Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain.

EUROPE AGAINST NEO-NAZISM. ONE PICTURE EQUALS ONE THOUSAND WORDS

JOHNNIE TO'S "DRUG WAR" OPENS APRIL 2 IN CHINA...WELL GO HAS USA RIGHTS (TRAILER)

SOUNDTRACK FOR BRIAN DE PALMA'S "PASSION": DONAGGIO, STEFFAN, DEBUSSY, AND BERLINER PHILARMONIKER......

          GERMAN POSTER FOR "PASSION".

The soundtrack release for Brian De Palma's Passion hit mailboxes early this week, and, well, since I can't see De Palma's new movie yet, I've been listening to his new movie. (speaking of which, I received confirmation from someone in the U.S. today that Passion will indeed open in U.S. theaters sometime in June of this year.) Without having seen the film, I am guessing the track list has been put together in a non-chronological fashion (this has been confirmed in a comment below from someone who has seen the film), to present the music in the most compelling flow possible.

Here's the short of it: I love the Pino Donaggio compositions on this soundtrack, as well as Claude Debussy's Prélude à L’après-Midi d’un Faune, which was performed by the Berliner Philarmoniker, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle (recorded live in 2004, it appears here courtesy of EMI Classics). Now, when you look at the back of the CD cover, you see three tracks with asterisks: "Back Issues," "Perversions And Diversions," and "Higher Heels." Those three tracks were each composed by Donaggio and Paolo Steffan, who has been working with Donaggio for a long time, and is credited on this album as Keyboard Programmer, as well as orchestrations throughout the soundtrack along with Donaggio and conductor Natale Massara. But the three tracks with the asterisks are the only three tracks that have a strong '80s vibe. The first, "Back Issues," is assumed to be the music heard in the background of the "Ass-Cam" commercial in the film. This track is highly amusing, in a mostly good way. I laugh heartily every time it comes on. It's a fun little track. It has what might be considered a companion piece near the end of the album, "Higher Heels," which is assumed to be the background music for a fashion show. Again, it is very '80s, but more annoying than fun, and it ends rather abruptly, with a quick fade, as if someone gave it the hook. In between is the center asterisk piece, "Perversions And Diversions." With its smoky saxophone entering the picture a little ways in, I keep thinking I'm going to hear Glenn Frey singing "You belong to the city, you belong to the night," like something out of Miami Vice. Very odd, this '80s vibe, which of course has been mentioned in many of the reviews of Passion.

In any case, the other Donaggio compositions are phenomenal. The CD opens with the bouncy, sinuous "Twin Souls," which is just heavy enough to avoid sounding like it belongs in a somewhat romantic comedy (like, perhaps, De Palma's Home Movies). "The Breakdown" is a beautiful piano ballad that brings to mind Donaggio's "Sally And Jack" theme from De Palma's Blow Out, especially when it is reprised on the final track, "Last Surprise." It is not until the third track that we get the "Passion Theme," which opens with quickly menacing chords, like a Herrmann-esque surprise, before falling back to a quiet piano motif that soon swells with romantic strings and ominous orchestrations. This is a wonderful theme that never seems to stop rising, with a conclusion that seems to leave everything hanging on the edge. I think my favorite track is "Know That Know," which features a heavy, spaced out string bass rhythm, the spaces filled in with strings and other orchestrations, and sounds like a cousin to Morricone's "Towards The Unknown" from De Palma's Mission To Mars. It ends with a slashing string surprise out ofCarrie or Dressed To Kill (and, of course, Herrmann's Psycho). "A Dreamers Dream" features more ominous musings that lead beautifully into the Debussy ballet.

All in all, a strong, achingly beautiful work from Donaggio.

THE LOOTING OF GREECE 3: ARMED SWAT TEAM MEN INVADE SMALL TOWN PROTESTING SELLING OUT PUBLIC LAND AND 30B USD GOLD FOR PEANUTS

...What you can get with 11 million euros in Ierissos, Chalkidiki, Greece ? How about gold, yes pure gold!, worth more than 22 billions of euros (USD 30 BILLION approximately)...

On January 28, 2004 in the Official Government Gazette the Law 3220/2004, was published, which effectively ratified the contract transferring Chalkidiki (a prefecture in Northern Greece that was aptly named “God's paradise” for its breathtaking views and ecosystem) public land, forests, and 310 houses, from the Greek state to an upstart company named "Greek Gold."
Among other valuable public assets sold for peanuts to a company that appears to be controlled by media and construction baron George Bobolas who never invested, or had experience from the mining industry in his life, the “socialist” Greek government of Konstantinos Semitis, sold out a few months before the Olympic Games of Athens 2004:

2,500 acres of public land

40,000 sq.m. of industrial
buildings and offices (public land again)

Mining area of 317,000
acres (public property)

11,000 sq.m. of urban (public) land

310 houses at Stratoni, Chalkidiki (public -owned)

2 complete assembly lines of mechanical equipment of olive processing land enrichment mechanical equipment (!!!)

Special mining equipment

A stock of 270.000 tons of arsenopyrite concentrate (approximately 250,000 ounces of pure gold)

All these and many many more for the bargain price of 11,000,000 euros. Peanuts back then in 2004.

Όμως αν είσαι οποιοσδήποτε άνθρωπος με στοιχειώδη ευαισθησία, αν είσαι γονιός που προσπαθεί να μεγαλώσει τα παιδιά του σε αυτή την άθλια χώρα (όπως την κατάντησαν), αν κάθε μέρα με αγωνία αναλογίζεσαι τι τα περιμένει στο μέλλον, τότε πως μπορείς να μένεις ψύχραιμος;

ITALIANS GRILL(-O) THE ROADBLOCKS FOR THE REST OF THE P.I.I.G.S. WHILE GREECE HAS FALLEN INTO A COMA ITALIAN VOTERS MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE...

The sweeping victory of Bepe Grillo and the Five Stars Movement in a G8 country like Italy, one of the world's major economies, and the comeback of the comeback of the politically undead Silvio Berlusconi  becomes the perfect ultimatum for the rest of the PIIGS countries: Portugal, Ireland, Greece,  Spain. With the referendum vote in United Kingdom coming soon , the European landscape  is going to experience drastic changes and transformations. The monetary union is dead. The old corrupted system has collapsed.

While idiotic and manipulative media in the zombieland of Greece dismiss Bepe Grillo's  as just another comedian and funny guy, unable to grasp the true meaning of the Italian vote and the undercurrent of the historical changes that European Union faces,  Italians dared to change the course of History with their vote... While Cypriots bowed down Italians took the risk and made a huge difference for themselves and the rest of Europe. Bravo!

A BEPE GRILLO VICTORY IN ITALIAN ELECTIONS MAY SHOWCASE THE WAY FOR CHANGE IN GREECE

..Born and raised through the web, Bepe Grillo's Five Star Movement in Italy is the brainchild of a clever and persistent Italian comedian, that signals the need for sweeping change in the out-dated, corrupted-to-the-bone European political system.
...So let's hope that today Italians vote for changing a decadent political system, and show other European countries, much like Greece, the right path to change things peacefully in a democracy...Yes, a Bepe Grillo and Five Stars Movement victory can also teach an alternative way to change and fix things in a faltering democracy like Greece, where the Neo-nazi, anti-semitic party has gathered over 10% of the votes in recent polls.

Marlon Brando gives the performance of his career as the tough prizefighter-turned-longshoreman Terry Malloy in this masterpiece of urban poetry. A raggedly emotional tale of individual failure and social corruption, On the Waterfront follows Terry’s deepening moral crisis as he must decide whether to remain loyal to the mob-connected union boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) and Johnny’s right-hand man, Terry’s brother, Charley (Rod Steiger), as the authorities close in on them. Driven by the vivid, naturalistic direction of Elia Kazan and savory, streetwise dialogue by Budd Schulberg, On the Waterfront was an instant sensation, winning eight Oscars®, including for best picture, director, actor, supporting actress (Eva Marie Saint), and screenplay.

GEORGE PAPANDREOU, THE MAN WHO DESTROYED GREECE, LECTURES COLUMBIA STUDENTS HOW (NOT) TO SAVE A COUNTRY

George Papandreou, the former Socialist prime minister who was at the helm when Greece’s economic ship smashed on the rocks of fiscal ruin, has landed a job at Columbia University teaching, of all things, how to govern financial crisis.
The Ivy League school announced the move with great fanfare last month, calling Greece a “living laboratory” for key global public policy challenges. Papandreou, who led Greece from October 2009 through November 2011, is teaching a course on the European financial crisis and will host a lecture Wednesday on “Bailouts and Ballots: The New Challenges to Democracy and the Case of Europe.”
Bringing in the man who led Greece when its economy cratered — and then went begging for bailouts — had some critics second-guessing the Manhattan school. Well before taking office, Papandreou, whose father and grandfather were also prime ministers, was also a top leader of the Socialist party whose policies led to Greece's metastacizing financial problems.

OSCAR-NOMINATED PALESTINIAN DIRECTOR EMAD BURNAT, OF 5 BROKEN CAMERAS INTERROGATED FOR SIXTY MINUTES BY IMMIGRATION IN LAX... MICHAEL MOORE TAKES HIS CAUSE TO TWITTER.... DOMINIC PATTEN AND DEADLINE.COM EXCLUSIVE REPORTAGE...

http://www.deadline.com/2013/02/michael-moore-springs-oscar-nominated-palestinian-director-from-lax-detention/

UPDATE, 12:38 PM: Hours after being detained at LAX last night, Oscar nominated director Emad Burnat has now spoken out for himself about what happened. “Ours was a very minor example of what my people face every day,” the Palestinian filmmaker says of his and his family’s experience with U.S. Customs officials Tuesday night. Fellow documentarian Michael Moore took to Twitter in protest last night after the director texted him when officials took the filmmaker, his wife and son into a holding area to find out why they were entering the country. Burnat, who is up for an Academy Award this weekend for his co-directing efforts on 5 Broken Cameras, was threatened with being refused entry but eventually allowed into the U.S. after being held for an hour and a half. Read his full statement on what happened here.
Los Angeles, CA – February 20, 2013 - “Last night, on my way from Turkey to Los Angeles, CA, my family and I were held at US immigration for about an hour and questioned about the purpose of my visit to the United States. Immigration officials asked for proof that I was nominated for an Academy Award® for the documentary 5 BROKEN CAMERAS and they told me that if I couldn’t prove the reason for my visit, my wife Soraya, my son Gibreel and I would be sent back to Turkey on the same day. After 40 minutes of questions and answers, Gibreel asked me why we were still waiting in that small room. I simply told him the truth: ‘Maybe we’ll have to go back.’ I could see his heart sink. Although this was an unpleasant experience, this is a daily occurrence for Palestinians, every single day, throughout he West Bank. There are more than 500 Israeli checkpoints, roadblocks, and other barriers to movement across our land, and not a single one of us has been spared the experience that my family and I experienced yesterday. Ours was a very minor example of what my people face every day.” — Emad Burnat, Co-Director of 5 BROKEN CAMERAS
PREVIOUSLY, 10:01 PM: Michael Moore took on U.S. Customs last night and helped get a fellow filmmaker into the country for Sunday’s Oscars. The Academy Award winning documentarian went on a Twitter tirade late Tuesday as Oscar nominated director Emad Burnat was detained along with his family by officials when he arrived at LAX from Turkey. “This all just happened tonight, a few hours ago. He was certain they were going to deport him. But not if I had anything to do about it,” Moore wrote. This is not the first time Burnat, the co-director of the Sundance winning doc 5 Broken Cameras, has been in America. This time he was arriving for this weekend’s Oscar ceremony when customs hauled him, his wife and their 8-year old son in for questioning on why he was in the States. “Although he produced the Oscar invite nominees receive, that wasn’t good enough & he was threatened with being sent back to Palestine,” tweeted Moore, who is a governor on the Academy’s Documentary branch. Burnet had texted Moore soon after being placed in the holding area. “I called Academy officials who called lawyers. I told Emad to give the officers my phone # and to say my name a couple of times,” added Moore last night. “After 1.5 hrs, they decided to release him & his family & told him he could stay in LA for the week & go to the Oscars. Welcome to America,” the Fahrenheit 911 director said. An insider tells me that the Academy had nothing to do with getting Burnat released from customs. “He was out before anyone had a chance to do anything,” they said. For Burnat, the welcome reminded him of home according to Moore.‘It’s nothing I’m not already used to,’ he told me later. ‘When u live under occupation, with no rights, this is a daily occurrence,’ “ Moore said online Burnat said to him after leaving LAX. Contacted by Deadline, U.S. Customs and Immigration said they had no comment on the incident. A former farmer, Burnat is the first Palestinian ever nominated for an Oscar for a documentary. The movie he and Israeli filmmaker Guy Davidi made details the tension and protests between Palestinians in the West Bank village of Bilin, the Israeli military and a nearby settlement.

Israeli officials have said that "5 Broken Cameras" is one of two Israeli documentaries up for an Oscar on Sunday ("The Gatekeepers" being the other), but the origin country of Burnat's film has been a source of controversy throughout awards season. ("5 Broken Cameras" is a co-production of Israel, Palestine and France.)
"I'm Israeli, Emad is Palestinian, personally I don't think films should have citizenships," co-director Guy Davidi told The Electronic Intifada back in January.
"This is a Palestinian film from the heart, from the mind and from the soul," Burnat said to HuffPost Live earlier this month about the film. "This is a Palestinian documentary."
