How did you get the idea to turn the riots into a movie?

I was trapped in "ASTY" (which means in ancient hellenic language The City) movie theater, in Athens downtown, on December 8, 2008, along with well-known in the international circut arthouse distributors and theater owners George Stergiakis and Antonis Stergiakis. And the filmgoers that were trying to return to their homes. I was supposed to go to the premiere of BANK BANG in the north suburbs, produced by my friend Yiannis Iakovides, and never made it. We were a group representing our nation...a public employee, a housewife, young couples on a date, demonstrators entering to find shelter etc.
(...)My offices were next to the Polytechnic school, on Mavromataion Street... I inhaled a lot of teargas and my vision of the world has been altered since then (laughs). I still remember the pain in the eyes. The agony to breath. We were walking in the area and it was like a city hit by a force majeure, natural disaster. I wanted to make a movie back then but nobody wanted to finance it. They prefered to do bottom line farce comedies, an alltime low. Or state subsidized trash that nobody wanted to see. I never wanted to be part of this system. One month later I left Greece.

Which parts of the movie are based on real facts and which are fiction?
It's based on a real incident. There's pure reality, the riots, and reality extended to fiction.
Like everybody else I was outraged. I was angry. The media couldn't explain the phenomenon. How kids from the ritzy suburbs united with working class people and immigrants...And how secret agents and provocateurs entered the mix to distract the public opinion.
We had the most corrupted government in the world, ala Banana Republic. They destroyed Greece.
I'm already getting warnings, through Facebook and emails, "you can't do that...it's too early", "this is a dangerous script", "you're going to be in trouble". I don't give a euro!
I want to make a statement about the current situation and the shape of things to come. This is a metaphor: If people don't learn to work together, to live together, they are going to be terminated. It's a safe road to extinction. But this is also a movie with a beggining, a middle and an unexpected finale. So you see in the movie Americans and Europeans, putting culture clashes aside, trying to survive. It's an intense claustrophobic, fast-paced thriller/drama but there's also a subplot. It's an oxymoron though:Hellas had to go through the bottom of the cup in order for certain people to understand basic things. Everybody was laughing. Now they are sorry... Sometimes it's too late for excuses.


Do you think we are rebels as a nation? Is this Democracy or does it cross the border according to your opinion?
I'm quoting Iphicrates on the film poster:"The story of my generation begins with me. Yours ends with you"... Maybe I should quote the Sex Pistols also:"There's no future in Greece's dreams".
Hellenic population became controllable and pathetic because of television. Now they discovered what happened and they are very angry.
Going against the flow is part of our DNA. We invented democracy but also hubris and vindication. Hellenic culture shaped cosmos in a unique way. But that was then. This is now: "The horror, the horror"...In the heart of darkness. And no Joseph Conrad to be the captain.
We have to rescue ourselves. Nobody is going to rescue us.
When the water is boiling the byproduct is steam. So in December of 2008 we had peaceful demonstrations, sit-downs with candles that the super-smart and extremely reasonable SWAT teams cracked down, and extreme violence-mostly caused by provocateurs mixing with the demonstrators. We had an indifferent prime minister who loved playing Playstation and a gang of crooked rats used to run the country. There's no democracy when you murder in cold-blood a 16 year-old sitting at a cafe. That's hubris. And there's no democracy when four people die in a bank branch. That's a murderous act and hubris too.
The so-called generation of Polytechneion destroyed everything for the next generations (moral values, dignity, judicial system, financial system). They looted Greece. Effectively they killed slowly their own children and grandchildren. You see 16-24 year-olds they don't know where to go, where to hide, what to believe, or not to believe.They are running around hopeless, desperate, confused, pathetic. Well I'm not! And there's also a 5% of the population who are fighters too.
I'm talking also about the Hellenism of diaspora. We are going to come back with a vengeance and reclaim our country...Sooner than later.

Vandals desecrated a Jewish cemetery in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki late on Thursday and three youths were arrested for the attack, authorities said on Friday.
The assailants smeared graffiti in the cemetery, police said. Greece's Jewish Council said the perpetrators were Neo-Nazis who spray painted anti-Semitic slogans and swastikas on the cemetery walls and destroyed graves.

Jewish cemeteries and synagogues have been the target of recent attacks in Greece. In January, arsonists attacked a synagogue on the Aegean island of Crete, alarming Greece's 8,000-strong Jewish community.

“Land of the Angels” Finds Support from Prominent Organizations

Los Angeles, CA — A number of prominent, international organizations have made statements supporting the production “Land of the Angels,” a film depicting the termination of Salonica, Greece’s Sephardic Jewish population and the Sonderkommando uprising at the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. Production on the film, produced by Metaphor Entertainment LLC, is set to begin filming in Spring 2011 in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Among the organizations that sent letters of support are the American Jewish Committee and the USC Shoah Foundation Institute. “The story of this onetime center of Sephardic Jewish life as well as the heroic episode of Greek Jewish concentration camp inmates to lead a genuine revolt at Auschwitz deserves to be told to a wide, international audience. We commend the plans of Dimitri Vorris to direct the film, ‘Land of the Angels,’ which will do just this,” said Rabbi Andrew Baker, Director of International Jewish Affairs at the American Jewish Committee.

Said Ari C. Zev, Director of Administration at the USC Shoah Foundation Institute, “the USC Shoah Foundation Institute strongly supports the concept and goals of the film project ‘Land of the Angels,’ which will tell the story of the Salonican Jewish community, as well as the general Greek Jewish community, and the tragedy of the devastating loss of the community during the Holocaust.”

The USC Shoah Foundation Institute has an archive of nearly 52,000 video testimonies of Holocaust survivors and other witnesses, from 56 countries and in 32 languages.

The “Land of the Angels” filmmakers are planning to utilize the Institute’s vast archive of video testimony while conducting research for the film.

“The existence of Shoah Foundation Institute’s video archives is assisting us tremendously to make a better film,” said producer-director Dimitri Vorris.

Other organizations supporting the film include Central Board of Jewish Communities of Greece, Jewish Greek Heritage Society of Southern California, American Hellenic Council of California and others.

A new movie about the 2008 December Riots in Greece promptly called “DECEMBER RIOTS”, is going under filming in the end of June.


Quoting Iphicrates: “The story of my generation begins with me. Yours ends with you”, the movie’s subplot focuses on corruption a la Banana Republic in Greece, and the execution in cold-blood of 16 year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos sitting with his friends at a café by two policemen.

The film is described as a sort of “LA HAINE” meets “DAS BOOT”…

The world forgets not only that Sephardic Greek Jewry suffered during the Holocaust too, but that Greek Jews were brave enough to revolt and fight under the most hopeless circumstances. These historical events have striking similarities with Leonidas and the 300 Spartans fighting the Battle at Thermopylae. The major difference is that, in this film, you don’t have an elite army fighting an Empire, but imprisoned, entrapped, everyday people in a death camp. They are hungry, tortured, abused, sick, ailing, armed only with an ingenious plot and self-made guns, against the Empire of the Third Reich. They are performing the ultimate sacrifice for their fellow man and woman,” said Vorris. Adding “The film is going to have a great ensemble cast. Its main protagonists at the Sonderkommando riots were 16-24 year olds. This is a different Holocaust movie. It can definitely bring in to the theaters younger demographics”.

To ensure historical accuracy the filmmakers are collaborating closely with Shoah Foundation at USC. The production is planning to utilize testimonies recorded over the course of many years from Shoah Foundation from survivors on Jewish life in Salonica and Sonderkommando, marking the first time ever that the public can see such footage.

“The existence of Shoah Foundation’s visual archives is assisting us tremendously to make a better film”, said producer-director Dimitri Vorris.

The Shoah Foundation Institute was founded in 1994 by Steven Spielberg, after he completed Oscar-winning film “Schindler’s List”, to document the experiences of survivors and other witnesses of the Holocaust before it was too late. Nearly 52,000 video testimonies, or 105,000 hours of unique life stories in 32 languages from 56 countries have been recorded.

Having optioned the rights to Robert B. Bowman's "THE AGONY OF GREEK JEWS 1940-1945" which documents the seldom-told story of the Greek Jews who perished in the Holocaust, producer-director Dimitri Vorris is aiming to begin production on the film in Spring 2011. The screenplay was co-written by Vorris and longtime collaborator Michael Kokkinaris. Steven B. Bowman, respected Professor of Judaic Studies at the University of Cincinnati and author of The Agony of Greek Jews 1940-1945, will also serve a technical advisor on the film.

“This is one of the most heroic pages of humankind history. “Sadly, the telling of the story of the Greek Jews has become particularly necessary and timely, as Crete’s historic Etz Hayyim synagogue was vandalized by anti-Semitic arsonists twice in January 2010. My hope, in making this film, is to help fight the breeding of such anti-Semitism by reminding people how much we have in common,” said Vorris.

Salonica, now Greece’s second largest city, was once called “The Mother of Israel” because of its prosperous and progressive Jewish community of approximately 70,000, a population that dwindled down to under 1,000 after the Holocaust.

An all-star cast of American and European actors is going to be announced at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

The price of Variety

Ever heard of “Iron Cross?” Don’t blame yourself if you haven’t: a Nazi revenge drama from freshman director Joshua Newton, opening in theaters next week, it appears to be notable principally for being the last film of the late Roy Scheider.

Newton, however, had such high hopes for the film that he talked investors into a $400,000 ad campaign in Variety, enough to buy daily For Your Consideration ads in the trade paper from November to the end of nomination voting in January. Following this, Variety itself selected the film for its screening series aimed at Academy members, alongside far more illustrious awards contenders.

Must be good, right? Well, Variety’s own critic Robert Koehler didn’t think so in his damning review of the film, which he denounced as “preposterous” and “hackneyed,” among other choice adjectives. A slightly embarrassing result for a film the paper had previously boosted, but as Gawker’s John Cook reports, Variety solved the problem quite easily — by removing Koehler’s review from their website altogether, after “Iron Cross”’s producers complained.

The moral of the story appears to be that $400,000, plus a little nagging, can buy you a clean critical slate from one of the industry’s foremost tastemakers.

I don’t call myself a full-time critic, but as someone who takes the task of reviewing films seriously, I don’t see any way in which Variety can be excused on this incident. No individual can claim to speak for an entire organization, but when a publication approves a critic to review a certain film, they are putting their trust in that person’s point of view — whether it’s in or out of step with the critical majority, or the hopes of the film’s marketing team.

Joshua Newton is well within his rights to feel dissatisfied with Koehler’s review, but he cannot feel entitled to favorable treatment simply because of a publicity investment, as he clearly does in this stroppy email that Cook dug up — wherein he complains that the “sneaky” Koehler isn’t the “top staff journalist” originally assigned to write the Variety review, that “his actions were sneaky and he must have known that his review would compromise our Variety campaign.”

To state the obvious, reviews and advertising space are not related. They’re managed by different departments, and there’s no need for them to work in sync. “The Hurt Locker” was negatively reviewed in Variety back in September 2008, but somehow managed to cope with that and run ads in Variety to this day. One bad review doesn’t mean everyone at Variety is against your movie, just as a healthy publicity profile in the paper doesn’t automatically mean everyone is behind it. Shame on Variety for not standing by their critic in this instance.

Vanity Fair's March issue came out a couple of weeks ago with a fold-out cover featuring nine young actresses to represent 'The Fresh Faces of 2010.'

Abbie Cornish, Kristen Stewart, Carey Mulligan, Amanda Seyfried, Rebecca Hall, Mia Wasikowska, Anna Kendrick, Emma Stone, and Evan Rachel Wood all had some sort of breakout year, some with more memorable performances than others. They are also all white and thin.
Not pictured was Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe, even though she was interviewed inside the magazine and has the most compelling breakout story of all.
"At first I thought, 'Hmm, should I be there?" she told Access Hollywood. "Then I very quickly got over it. I think if I were a part of that shoot I would have felt a little left out anyway."
She is gracious and self-effacing, and probably gives a great Oscar acceptance speech.
"I would have felt a little like... whether or not I should have been there," she said. "[It] doesn't matter, because I wasn't on it and I'm excited to be mentioned anywhere, and it doesn't matter to me where I'm not mentioned."

Thought you might like to read this article from a young man who lives in Greece. Some amazing parallels here of things happening in our country.
I am 26 years old and live in Greece. I am writing this letter in order to let you know about a new law in Greece announced yesterday.
The financial minister of Greece announced yesterday that from 1/1/2011 all financial transactions of sums above 1500 euros in cash, will be banned. For any transaction above 1500 euros, only credit cards and checks will be legal. The formal explanation for this law is it will combat those who do not pay taxes. But we all know this is not the case...
It seems the new world order wants to make Greece a testing ground for their new laws. For the past months, Greece have been attacked without mercy. We have been called liars, frauds, cheaters, thieves. They are threatening us constantly with banning from the euro zone and default. [These charges are] not true. ... The problem is, based on their accusations and (the virtual) bad situation of Greek finances, they will pass their experimental laws of their new world order.
The fairly new Government of the socialist party, elected 4 months ago, forgot all its promises, and is determined to pass laws giving citizenship to illegal immigrants after 5 years, without any trade-off. We are 10 million Greeks here, and almost 3 million mostly illegal immigrants, who will obtain Greek nationality and will gain the right to bring their families here too... In Pakistan there are even ads saying "for 5000 euros we get you to Greece, to study free, work, make families, and obtain EU passports"...
And now this... The previous government created a new ID card, to collect data from people since childbirth. This government will ban transactions in cash over 1500 euros, in order to make all of us have credit cards. The obvious first step is to ban all cash transactions, then merge this new ID card with the credit system, then, well.... insert this merged ID card into our bodies...
Our peoples' morale is low, society is disorganized because of immigration and propaganda, and we will not fight those laws. You people living in the Western World, be prepared because they are planning the same for you!

BACKGROUND

I will try to give you my personal view of the conditions in Greece.
First of all, there is no trust in politicians. Most people distrust them and know they are scum, but continue to vote for the same people in every election. This happens because they promise privileges in order to get votes. Most politicians are members of secret societies, and have close ties to USA and European elites. Our current prime minister is even an American citizen...
A young man living in Greece and having no connections, is hopeless. Without connections, he will have major difficulties if he wants to join a good University(or complete his studies without bribes), if he wants to find a job, or create his own. He will be forced to join the army while privileged young men with connections will illegally avoid it.
And there is no point discussing finding love... Of course pretty women will pick wealthier men, but in Greece even women of moderate appearance prefer men with deep pockets. They prefer sharing the top men than having a man only for themselves.






And the top men in Greece are all frauds. Greece, apart from some natural resources and its tourism industry, produces nothing of value. Corruption is so big, that all productive forces are drowned. So all men of power here, get their power from plundering the Greek people, or having connections with those that do it. Women (and their families) of course are not concerned about that. As long as someone is wealthy, he is desirable, and value as a person is irrelevant.






Despite poor economic condition (but not so desperate as to warrant dire measures), people in power take pleasure in attacking traditional customs, Orthodox Christianity, and traditional Greek patriots. They protect illegal immigrants, and silence their crimes. They attack Christianity, in the media, at schools etc. They are removing all Christian symbols from public places.






MEDIA






Greek media are a pile of garbage. For the biggest part of the day, most major TV networks will show shows discussing greek "vips" lifestyle, sexual relations etc. There are few "political" shows and news shows, all trying to cover the truth and turn the attention of the people at matters of trivial importance. Propaganda is blatant. The previous government was literally destroyed by TV networks. They promoted heavily the current government, so strongly that previous prime minister was forced to make new elections despite being only for 2 years in government.






Current prime minister made promises, NONE of which kept after being elected. Only a few days after election, he went on with the plans of New World Order. He created an artificially dire financial situation, in order to be able to pass whatever laws he wanted, plus giving his friends some money... He "cooked" our budget, by moving payments of 2010 in 2009 and incomes from 2009 to 2010, in order to both make our deficit bigger and be able to claim in 2010 that he "improved" our economy... This doesn't mean that our previous prime minister wasn't a puppet, just that he wasn't able to fulfill New World Order directions like the new government.






Huge economic scandals are discovered every day, and buried by Greek propaganda media. And most honest people are so concerned with working 2 and 3 jobs in order to feed their families, that cannot fight this corruption. Greek people work on average many more hours weekly than other EU countries, get much less pay, and pay more for the same products. And because of the traitors in government, EU newspapers and media call our people lazy. They say we need to work even more and receive even less... Of course this is not true. The plunder of Greek people has been made with their assistance. But this is a long subject and i wont go on with it.

CONCLUSION

In a few words... Life in Greece sucks. Since I am a computer programmer, i have many times thought about leaving for a better country and make my living there. But i do not want to abandon my home... yet. I would be willing to fight this system, but i see no point since the system is so well entrenched it cannot be tackled by a few men alone.


The reason i wrote you my previous letter is because this new law of banning cash transactions above 1500 euros is just another step towards cashless society, and is being implemented in Greece as a testing phase. I strongly believe it is a matter of time before most western nations see similar laws.

Joseph Andrew Stack was named as the pilot who crashed into the Echelon Building in Austin, Texas on February 18, 2010. According to the Austin Statesman, Stack left behind a suicide note/manifesto titled "Well Mr. Big Brother IRS man... take my pound of flesh and sleep well" on his website EmbeddedArt.com which is signed "Joe Stack (1956-2010) 02/18/2010." Stack's manifesto ended with, "The communist creed: From each according to his ability, to each according to his need. The capitalist creed: From each according to his gullibility, to each according to his greed" at the end of the long document.


According to several reports, Stack may have set his home on fire before crashing into the office building, which housed offices of the CIA and IRS. According to FOX News, the teenage-daughter of the pilot told authorities that her father had set fire to the house and took off in a plane. Local NTSB authorities said the plane crash may have been intentional. The FAA said that the plane left the Georgetown airport, located in North Austin, at approximately 9:40 a.m. The plane slammed into the building creating a huge fireball and explosion at approximately 10:00 a.m. The smoke could be seen from a mile away. The pilot, Joseph Andrew Stack, did not have a flight plan and may have stolen the plane.
